The client wanted to take advantage of their old unfinished basement by making it livable space for their growing family AND have the final product feel like a natural extension of their existing home. To accomplish this the basement was remodeled to include a family room, a kids bedroom with study area, an on suite bathroom and large storage area. The design and style is open, light and highly usable…everything basements usually are not.
Must See Solutions
- Low ceilings: Overcome this common problem by moving the sightline to interesting wall finishes and directed lighting. To do this we installed shiplap accent walls, a floor to ceiling photo wall and creative accent walls throughout.
- Low light: Illuminate basements with a mix of layered lighting types and zones. To accomplish this, we added 3 large windows to the basement, including a high mounted 24x60” window in the family room for lots of natural light AND wall space for furniture. Light is layered with a mix of warm white LED recessed lighting, spot lighting, niche lighting and wall sconces. You don’t have to do a lot to affect how the space feels, just make sure it layers and has some indirect lighting.
- Maximizing every inch: With a limited footprint and duct work below the ceiling, the goal is maximizing it with alcoves, niches and dual use walls. The other trick is to apply ceiling to floor finishes or intriguing layouts to make the space feel bigger. Check out how we did this with floor to ceiling barnwood treatment on the fireplace, an open corner niche in the bath and a dual use wall with a study alcove one side and a shiplap TV wall on the other.
- Making it a room for her: The bedroom and on suite bath was a much needed space for their growing daughter who needed her, personalized space. A custom full wall picture, magnetic chalk board, and study alcove make the space perfect for her but also allows for future changes and updates. Her preference of color and style were woven into the designs so that they will hold up today as well as tomorrow…. even the custom glass shower niche with recessed corners and hidden lighting.
