This is our client’s second house with us in the Tour of Remodeled Homes - the first was in 2002. The home is 1940’s ranch with a basement and spectacular view in the southwest hills.
Prior to purchasing the home, our client contacted with us to make sure we could start the remodel as soon as they received the keys. The basement was done first so they could move in while the main level was remodeled. The basement has a kitchenette, laundry room, exercise room and a full bathroom.
The goal was to update the home without eliminating its original character and features. We were able to restore most of the original built-in features and open the space to allow for a better flow throughout the house.
The kitchen opening was widened by two feet to get rid of the doorway feeling. We expanded the opening from the family room by four feet and added a peninsula with a raised bar with bar seating. We also put in a half door on the countertop to allow a pass through to the dining room breakfast bar.
In the master suite, we were able to refinish the existing mahogany built-in dresser unit. We removed the walk-in closet and moved the separating wall into the bedroom space to allow for a full bathroom with a walk-in shower, freestanding tub, water closet and a large vanity with two sinks. We added a free-standing wall with a transom window that has a decorative screen to create a closet space that is walked through between bedroom and bath.
All the windows were replaced maintaining the original trim work. The guest bath, basement bath, laundry room and kitchenette have all been redone with matching cabinet features and stained in a charcoal gray finish to tie in the paint and finished throughout the home.
